The following is an explanation of how the spiritual aspect of reality operates, with Biblical sources:

Where our Treasures Are, There Our Hearts Are

Biblically our hearts are not bound to our bodies. They will naturally gravitate to whatever, whomever, or wherever we treasure.

Matthew 6:19 ¶ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Luke 12:33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.
34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Thoughts Determine Nature

The thoughts within oneself affect external realities, including one's own nature. As one thinks, so they are. Similarly, the thoughts from one's heart can themselves make a person unclean even apart from physical actions; which is why we must carefully control our thoughts as well as our actions and words.

Proverbs 23:7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

Matthew 15:17 Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

There Are Only Two Sides Spiritually

There are only two sides spiritually, the side of God the Father and Jesus, the Kingdom of Heaven, and Satan's kingdom with the demons or fallen angels. As such, those who work miracles for Jesus are clearly on God's side, since those who are not against Him are with Him and vice versa.[1] Christians cannot fellowship with both God and demons.[2]

Mark 9:38 And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.
39 But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.
40 For he that is not against us is on our part.

1 Corinthians 10:20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.
10:21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

Luke 11:23 He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.

Testing the Spirits

Christians are called to test spirits to see whether or not they are of God.[3] Jesus warned that many will falsely claim to be Him or His prophets before His coming.[4] Testing can occur by seeing whether a person is willing to glorify Jesus as Lord[5] and acknowledge that He came to Earth physically from Heaven.[6]

1 John 4:1 ¶ Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

1 Corinthians 12:3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

2 John 1:7 ¶ For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

2 Peter 2:1 ¶ But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

Revelation 2:2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:

Christians Are Spiritually Connected

Christians are spiritually connected as one body through Christ[7], built together as a temple for God with Jesus as the chief cornerstone, seated together in the Heavens in spiritual places. As such, spiritual connections between individuals is possible.

Ephesians 2:4 ¶ But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

Romans 12:4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:
5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

Christians Are One Through Christ

See also Trinity

The nature of oneness is commonly misunderstood. The Trinity are one with one another through a sharing of spirit, or interconnection of their spirits, not because they are the same being (they are separate, God the Father, Jesus the Son of God, and the Holy Spirit) but because they are spiritually connected. In the same way, Christians are one with them by them indwelling our bodies with their spirits, so that we are one with Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit in the same way they are with each other.

John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

John 17:11 ¶ And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

John 17:20 ¶ Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
24 ¶ Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

As such, spirits are not bound to bodies, they can indwell other bodies, resulting in a shared connection between different people's spirits.

Demon Possession

That is also how demon possession works, Biblically. Demons are simply the spirits of fallen angels, but rather than the "ministering spirits" which exist to help and protect Christians while serving God (unfallen angels)[8] they were cast down and can occupy the bodies of others, tempting them to do sin. Demons/Angels are able to not only inhabit the bodies of people, but of animals as well, changing from one body to another.[9] Prophets of God are possessed also, but by good spirits.[10]

Hebrews 1:13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?
14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

1 Corinthians 14:32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

Demons Are Worshiped

Behind idols are demons, fallen angels, being worshiped. Those worshiping the gods of other religions are actually worshiping demons, fallen angels.[11]

Deuteronomy 32:17 They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.

1 Corinthians 10:20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.
21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

Revelation 9:20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:

Multiple Spirits in One Body

Furthermore, many demons can dwell in a single person's body, see the case of Legion, a man possessed by numerous demons. The demons begged Jesus not to banish them out of the country. Jesus allowed them to go into the bodies of a herd of pigs, which ran down into the sea (presumably the demons' way of escaping physical bodies to travel or enter humans again).[12] As another example, Mary Magdalene was possessed by seven demons before Jesus healed her.[13]

Hebrews 1:13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?
14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

Mark 5:8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.
9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.
10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.
11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.
12 And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.
13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.

Luke 8:2 And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,

Demons Wander the Earth and Communicate With Each Other

Demons wander the Earth seeking homes (people's bodies) where they can find rest. When they find a home that has been cleaned, purified from demon possession, they then bring other demons with them.[14]

Matthew 12:43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.
44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.
45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

Purging / Exorcism

One can purge oneself and cleanse one's own heart, eyes, and mind.[15] Spiritual possession occurs in multiple ways, and thus controlling various aspects of oneself can allow a cleansing to take place:

  • Breath: The Biblical word for "spirit" literally carries the meaning of "wind," "air," or "breath." The common word translated spirit in Hebrew (Old Testament) is ruwach[16] and in Greek (New Testament) is pneuma.[17] As such, demons appear to enter the body through breathing, and as such, can be inhaled or exhaled.[18] Controlling one's breath through exhalation affects them.
  • Eyes: Demons can dwell behind one's eyelids, and simply flickering eyelids rapidly or opening them so the air behind them leaves can help remove that which should not be in oneself. As such, Jesus cautioned against those who have evil eyes that cause them to serve mammon instead of God.[19]
  • Purifying the Heart: Christians are commanded to be like little children in innocence, with clean, pure hearts. This allows a closer relationship to God the Father, which is why Jesus said the angels of little children are close to God the Father.[20] Christians can become "double-minded" and the solution is purifying one's heart.[21] It appears that sin gives the demons more power to control those they possess. In Revelation 18 for example, Babylon (the Roman Empire/Church) is symbolized by a promiscuous woman who sleeps with all wealthy leaders throughout the world, and has fallen from grace to become possessed by all types of demons because of her sinfulness.[22]
James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

Revelation 16:13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.
14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

Revelation 18:2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.

Matthew 6:22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

However, per the previous section, even if one purges oneself from demons and their wickedness, one must then submit to God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit to be filled with them - otherwise the demons will simply return with even more demons.[23] If we draw near to God, He will draw near to us; if we seek Him diligently with all of our hearts then we will find Him.[24] Even the most sinful people can be cleansed so that "though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow."[25]

Isaiah 1:16 ¶ Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;
17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.
18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

Demons Must Obey Christ and God

Demons must obey Christ and God. Indeed the demons themselves worship Jesus and God the Father, and must obey their orders, to the degree that demons even begged Jesus not to torture or destroy them.[26] Jesus has the ability to give such power over them to His disciples.[27] As such, Christians who are right with God the Father can have absolute power over them and verbally command them to leave, or even give them other commands, as Jesus did.[28]

There is no magic in it, if one is living obedient to God the Father in right relation with Him, then one has the simple authority to tell the demons what to do.[29] The power is from God and Jesus. Without Jesus Christians can do nothing.[30]

Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

Luke 10:20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

Mark 1:23 ¶ And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
24 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.
25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.
26 And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.
27 And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.

Matthew 8:16 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:

Mark 1:34 And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.

However, the power comes only through relationship with Christ. When non-Christians attempted to command demons like Paul did in the name of Jesus, the demon responded "Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you?" The demon then viciously attacked them.

Acts 19:13 ¶ Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.
14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.
15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?
16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

Not Bound by Location

Nor is such spiritual command and control subject to physical limitations. One can command angels and demons even from great distances.[31] In Paul's case, a simple handkerchief from Paul alone was enough to remove unclean spirits, even without him being present.[32]

Mark 7:25 For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:
26 The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.
27 But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.
28 And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs.
29 And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.
30 And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.

Acts 19:11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:
12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

In some cases, perhaps specific to more powerful angels, they can even act like humans by performing physical actions. As such, it is possible that the most powerful demons, being former angels, may have such ability also.

Acts 12:6 And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.
7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

Prayer, Faith, Fasting Improve Control

The ability to cast out demons is improved by things like faith, prayer, and fasting. As such, there were times when the apostles were unable to cast out demons that only Jesus was able to cast out, because they were not in the right spiritual state.[33]

Matthew 17:14 ¶ And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,
15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.
16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.
17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.
18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.
19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?
20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
